My future mother-in-law alters my wedding plans without informing me
With just one month left until our wedding, my fiancé’s mother unexpectedly asked the event planners to change all the arrangements without consulting us.
My fiancé and I are currently studying abroad and plan to return to Vietnam next month for the wedding. My future mother-in-law contributed VND300 million (US$11,804) to cover the expenses, while we were expected to use the money we had saved from working part-time abroad for the remaining costs. Since we are overseas, I hired an event planning company to take care of all the details, including flower arrangements, invitations, and other tasks. The total cost of these services came to exactly VND300 million, which coincidentally matched the amount my future mother-in-law contributed.
A few days ago, the event planning team visited my fiancé’s house to assess the venue. I didn’t anticipate that my future mother-in-law would inquire about the cost and then complain that it was too high. She went on to request that the entire decoration plan be changed, replacing all the imported fresh flowers with artificial ones, without consulting us. She told the planners that since she was paying for the wedding, they should follow her wishes.
As I’m abroad and dealing with a significant time zone difference, I wasn’t aware of this change until a full day later, when I contacted the event planners and they informed me about the alterations.
I feel frustrated and unsure about how to proceed. My fiancé doesn’t want to make a big deal of it, and he’s advising me to let it go. But I believe this issue needs to be addressed directly so that my future mother-in-law respects my decisions once I become her daughter-in-law.
Are my concerns justified?
