After going unsold in IPL 2025 auction, Prithvi Shaw gets out on a duck in SMAT 2024
New Delhi: Nothing seems to be going right at the moment for talented Indian batter Prithvi Shaw. After going unsold in the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction, Shaw was dismissed on a duck in Mumbai’s clash against Maharashtra in the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024 on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old, who has been facing the heat from all corners over his fitness and disciplinary issues, was under the spotlight in the game after going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction. He came out to open for Mumbai with Angkrish Raghuvanshi and was dismissed on a 3-ball duck in the very first over after getting caught off the bowling of left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary.
Shaw was part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) since making his IPL debut in 2018. He was also one of DC’s retained players in the IPl 2022 mega auction. However, despite being given regular chances and being backed to the hilt, Shaw’s performances were far from convincing as he was eventually released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction this year.
Shaw had been recently dropped from the Mumbai Ranji squad over fitness and disciplinary issues. He was reportedly accused of turning up late at training sessions and missing practice frequently for Mumbai. From being regarded as the next Sachin Tendulkar to losing his IPL contract, Shaw’s downfall is a lesson for all young cricketers across the country.
Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Choudhary shine
Team India star Shreyas Iyer continued his impressive run with the bat in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024 as he slammed a brilliant knock of 39-ball 71 to help Mumbai beat Maharashtra by 5 wickets in the game. After Shaw’s duck, skipper Iyer combined with senior batter Ajinkya Rahane to help Mumbai chase down the target of 172 runs comfortably with 2.5 overs to spare.
Rahane too looked in fine form as he notched up a quickfire 52 off 34 balls with the help of 3 sixes and 3 fours. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad managed only 19 runs in 10 balls but left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary impressed for Maharashtra in their clash against Mumbai with a 4-wicket haul.
The CSK pacer dismissed Shaw, Iyer, Rahane and Suryansh Shegde to finish with excellent figures of 4/33 in his 4 overs. Choudhary was bought at his base price of Rs 30 lakh by CSK at the IPL 2025 mega auction.
