Government blocked 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs

The central government has blocked 6.69 lakh SIM cards and 1.32 lakh International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers reported by police officials to curb cyber crimes in the country. This information was given to the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. In a written reply to a question, Minister of State for Home Bandi Sanjay Kumar said the central government and telecom service providers (TSPs) have taken steps to identify and block incoming international spoofed calls that appear to be originating from Indian mobile numbers. A system has been prepared for. “Recently, such international spoofed calls have been made by cyber criminals in cases of fake digital arrests, FedEx scam and impersonation as government and police officials,” the minister said.
He said instructions have been issued to TSPs to block such incoming international spoofed calls. He said, “As of 15 November 2024, more than 6.69 lakh fake SIM cards and 1.32 lakh IMEIs reported by police officials have been blocked by the Government of India.” He said that Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System under I4C has been launched in the year 2021 for immediate reporting of financial frauds and to prevent misappropriation of funds by fraudsters. “Financial amount of over Rs 3,431 crore has been saved in over 9.94 lakh complaints so far,” he said.
