Red flags in relationships: 5 Clear signs to move on
New Delhi: Relationships are built on the basis of love, trust and honesty with your partner, no matter how good or bad it may look, it is always important ot tell your partner everything in life. However, not all relationships are meant to last. Sometimes, staying in a toxic or unhealthy relationship can drain your emotional, mental, and even physical well-being.
Sometimes, holding back tightly can loosen some relationships and may let us ignore signs that the relationship is over and will not last a very long time, which is not correct for both partners. While all relationships are meant to have a rough phase in life, it does not mean you always have to stick to the ones that can’t be ignored. Knowing when to leave is important before it is too late.
Red flags are often subtle at first but become more apparent as the relationship progresses. They may manifest as a lack of communication, constant criticism, controlling behaviour, or even emotional and physical abuse.

Here are a few signs you need to check in and know if it is the right time to move on from a relationship or not.
1. Lack of communication
Healthy communication is really important for a relationship to run smoothly, however with time, it may get difficult to deliver proper communication or talk about your feelings. If your partner constantly shuts down conversations, avoids discussing important issues, or disregards your feelings, it’s a red flag. Over time, if you are not able to communicate properly about your feelings with your partner, it may become toxic leading to the end of the relationship.
2. Constant demotivation
Constructive feedback helps relationships grow, but constant criticism and disrespect are damaging. If your partner belittles you, mocks your achievements, or dismisses your opinions, it can erode your self-esteem and create a toxic environment.
3. Controlling behaviour
Controlling behaviour, or stopping your partner from doing something which is liked by them, is one of the worst forms of being toxic. Everyone has their own life and space and must be allowed to do things as per their choices. In a healthy relationship, both partners should have the freedom to make their own choices. If your partner tries to control your actions, decisions, or social life, it’s a serious red flag. This behaviour stems from dominance and toxicity, leading to move on from such a relationship.
4. Emotional or Physical abuse
Any form of abuse, whether emotional, physical, or psychological, is a clear sign that you need to leave the relationship immediately. Abuse often leads to long-term trauma and can severely impact your mental health and safety. No one is ever allowed to hurt you in a way that you can never heal from that trauma for a lifetime. Prioritise your safety and well-being above all else.
5. Not feeling happy anymore
A healthy relationship should bring joy, comfort, and fulfilment. If you find yourself constantly unhappy, anxious, or emotionally drained, it’s important to evaluate the relationship. Staying in a relationship out of fear, guilt, or obligation can lead to long-term unhappiness. You will never be able to feel happy again with a person who has done nothing good but harm to you and your feelings. It is important to know, when to leave, and act accordingly.
It takes a lot of courage and effort to leave a relationship after a certain point of time. But this does not mean you have to stay in a toxic relationship for a lifetime and feel unhappy. Moving on at the right time can help you heal easily and learn from the lessons of the past to not repeat the mistakes in future and lie happily with satisfaction.
