Cyclonic storm Fangal: Fangal will create havoc in Tamil Nadu, airlines issue travel advisory

New Delhi. Cyclonic Storm Fangal is expected to reach Tamil Nadu today. Because of this, there is a possibility of heavy rain here. In view of this, Indigo Airlines issued a travel advisory on Tuesday night, stating that flights to and from Chennai, Tuticorin and Madurai are being affected, while Tiruchirappalli and Salem may also be affected now.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the deep depression located over southwest Bay of Bengal has recently been moving northwards at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour. As of 11:30 pm on Tuesday night, the deep depression was located 190 km south-east of Trincomalee, 470 km south-east of Nagapattinam, 580 km south-east of Puducherry and 670 km south-east of Chennai.

The Meteorological Department said that this deep depression may strengthen further into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday and will then move north-westwards towards the Tamil Nadu coast, passing through the Sri Lankan coast. Apart from this, Regional Meteorological Center (RMC), Chennai said that the deep depression in the Bay of South West Bengal is likely to turn into a cyclonic storm on Wednesday.

Red alert issued in Tamil Nadu

Chennai and its suburbs have been receiving torrential rains since Tuesday morning. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall for the region, with isolated heavy falls at times. This rain may continue till November 28. The India Meteorological Department has issued several warnings for Tamil Nadu. A red alert has been issued for extremely heavy rainfall in three central districts on November 26, while heavy rainfall is expected in two districts on November 27. Apart from this, a yellow alert has been issued for Chennai from November 27 to 29, in which heavy rain is expected. Yellow and orange alert has been issued in other districts of Tamil Nadu like Kanchipuram, Tiruvallur and Chengalpet from November 27 to 30. The weather department also said that light to moderate rain may occur over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on November 28. Also, there is a possibility of storm and lightning at some places.
