Lalit Modi names a franchise Shah Rukh Khan wanted to buy before Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL
Shah Rukh Khan was not interested in buying Kolkata Knight Riders as he was looking for a different franchise. This was revealed by Lalit Modi, the first chairman of the Indian Premier League.
Lalit Modi spoke to Raj Shamani and said that SRK was keen on buying the Mumbai franchise. However, he agreed to go for Kolkata after Reliance Industries Ltd. bought the Mumbai team.
“Shah Rukh Khan wanted Mumbai, but Mukesh Ambani took that franchise. Kolkata was available and Shah Rukh Khan invested in the team. He made cricket entertaining,” he said.
Mumbai was the most expensive franchise, and the Ambanis had to pay $111.90 million. Shah Rukh Khan joined hands with the Mehta Group to buy Kolkata for $75.09 million.
“Shah Rukh Khan and I were schoolmates. When I approached him for cricket, I had little knowledge about the game, but I still urged him to be a part of it.”
The King of Bollywood has played a big role in the franchise’s success. KKR have won three IPL titles and is the third most successful franchise after Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.
