Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who won from Kerala's Wayanad, took oath as a Lok Sabha MP on Thursday wearing a Kerala Kasavu sari, a prominent off-white sari with gold border seen in Malayali festivals. Her attire seemed to be a subtle hint of her actively working in Wayanad.
Holding the Constitution book in her hand, 52-year-old Priyanka Gandhi Vadra took the oath in the presence of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla and MPs sitting in Parliament. Her brother Rahul Gandhi, mother Sonia Gandhi, husband Robert Vadra and their children and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge were present at the event.
With Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's entry into the Lok Sabha, there are three members of the Gandhi family in Parliament for the first time in decades. While Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Rahul Gandhi will sit in the Lok Sabha, their mother Sonia Gandhi is in the Rajya Sabha after not contesting from Rae Bareli in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Rahul Gandhi, who won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, decided to retain his family bastion and vacated Wayanad, fielding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from there. He received 6.22 lakh votes and defeated his nearest CPM rival Satyan Mokeri by over four lakh votes, which is more than Rahul Gandhi got in the 2024 elections.
After her victory, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that she was eager to become the voice of the people in Parliament.
She tweeted, “I am so grateful for the trust you have placed in me. I will make sure that over time, you truly feel that this win is a win for you and for the person you have chosen to represent you.” He understands your hopes and dreams and I look forward to being your voice in Parliament.”
Rahul Gandhi won a landslide victory in Wayanad, securing 6.47 lakh votes by a margin of 3.64 lakh votes. He held this constituency twice in 2019 and 2024 elections.
Apart from Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress leader Ravindra Chavan, who defeated his BJP rival in the Lok Sabha by-election from Nanded seat, also took oath as MP.
Robert Vadra posted pictures of Priyanka Gandhi taking oath on Facebook and wrote, “Congratulations.”
However, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya took a dig at Priyanka Gandhi over her swearing-in ceremony. He tweeted, “New Muslim League MP from Wayanad takes oath. This is a historic moment for the Gandhi family.”
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's entry into politics
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra entered politics in 2019 after being appointed Congress general secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh. A year later, he was given the responsibility of the entire state.
Although his party failed to make an impact in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, he played a key role in taking the grand old party forward in Uttar Pradesh and other states in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. There was speculation that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra would be fielded from Rae Bareli. However, he declined to contest the elections due to organizational responsibilities.
Under Priyanka Gandhi Vadra's watch, the Bharat Bloc – Congress and Samajwadi Party – won 43 of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh, bringing the BJP juggernaut to a halt and ensuring that the saffron party enjoys a majority of 272 in the Lok Sabha. Could not cross the figure.
He also played a key role in helping his party win Rae Bareli, from where Rahul Gandhi had contested, and Amethi, where Gandhi family ally Kishori Lal Sharma defeated then Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani.
