What to do if car brakes fail? Know the important steps
Obnews Automobile Desk: In case of brake failure, the most important thing is to take the right steps with a cool mind instead of panicking. If the brakes fail while driving, you should take some important steps to ensure the safety of yourself and others. Here we are telling you such precautions and measures which can help you.
1. Stay calm and don't panic
When car brakes fail, first of all keep yourself calm. Being nervous can reduce your thinking ability, and can lead to wrong decisions. You can take the right steps only with a cool mind.
2. Use the handbrake properly
If the brakes fail, use the handbrake first, but do not apply it suddenly. Apply the handbrake slowly, because applying the brakes suddenly can spoil the balance of the vehicle and may cause the vehicle to slip.
3. Resort to engine braking
Reduce the speed of the vehicle by slowly shifting down the gear. In manual vehicles, shift to second or first gear, and in automatic vehicles, use L (low gear). Due to this the speed of the vehicle will gradually reduce.
4. Move the car to the side of the road
Carefully take the vehicle to the side of the road. Try to stop the vehicle at a place where there is not much traffic and the vehicle can be stopped safely.
5. Choose a suitable place to increase friction
If possible, move the vehicle to an area with grass, gravel or sand. This will help in controlling the speed of the vehicle and in case of brake failure, the vehicle will stop easily.
6. Use horn and lights
Sound the horn continuously and keep the hazard lights on to alert all nearby drivers. This will make others aware of your danger and they will be cautious.
7. Use slopes or obstacles
Try taking the car up a small hill or slope. This method will help in slowing down the speed of the vehicle and it will be easier to control the vehicle.
8. Rub lightly against the wall or edge
If all the above methods do not work, try stopping the vehicle by lightly rubbing it against a wall, railing or curb. This can be done only in emergencies and should be approached with utmost caution.
Ways to avoid brake failure
Some precautions should be taken to avoid brake failure:
- Get your brakes serviced regularly.
- Check the condition of the brake fluid.
- If any strange noise or vibration occurs, get it checked by a mechanic immediately.
- With caution, proper knowledge and preparation, you can ensure the safety of yourself and others in the event of brake failure.
