Melissa Barrera fired over Palestine support
Melissa Barrera, who has played the role of Sam Carpenter in the popular Hollywood film series ‘Scream’, has spoken openly about the difficulties she faced after voicing her opinion on Palestine.
In a recent interview, the 34-year-old Mexican actress said that last year was the hardest period of her life.
“It was the darkest and hardest year of my life. Many times it felt like my career was over,” she said.
Barrera had expressed her views on the ongoing situation in Gaza on social media in October 2023. She wrote in an Instagram post: “Gaza has been reduced to a concentration camp right now. It’s genocide and ethnic cleansing.”
She also accused the Western media of bias, saying: “The Western media only shows one side… We don’t need more hate. No more Islamophobia, no more anti-Semitism.”
The comments sparked a backlash, with Spyglass Studio firing Barrera from ‘Scream VII’.
Barrera revealed that her work opportunities were limited after the conflict. “There was silence for ten months,” she said. “I was only getting mediocre scripts, but not the roles I was excited about.”
The actress said that this time was also a learning opportunity for her. “I have not compromised on my principles. If the role is not interesting, I don’t act.”
Expressing her love for the ‘Scream’ series, she said: “I got a lot from those films, but because of this bittersweet memory, my feelings have changed a bit now.
