Citing China Press, The Star reported that the actor recounted the incident on the Chinese talk show “Voice.” He explained that the event occurred while he was in Beijing filming a movie. Running late for the set, he opted to take a taxi to save time. However, the taxi driver, who insisted on only picking up passengers traveling in the same direction as his route, turned Chow away, claiming he was off duty.
In a rush, Chow revealed his identity, telling the driver “I am Chow Yun Fat,” hoping the driver would make an exception. Unmoved, the driver replied: “Who’s Chow Yun Fat? I don’t know him.”
Chow was eventually able to persuade the driver to take him to his destination. Rather than feeling offended, he found the situation amusing.
“Maybe I’m not very famous after all,” Chow joked about the experience.
At 69, Chow came from humble beginnings. Before joining TVB in 1974, he worked a variety of jobs, including as a shoeshine boy, office assistant, parcel delivery worker, hotel employee, and even a taxi driver.
He gained fame through TVB dramas such as “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly” and “The Bund.” Throughout his remarkable career, he has earned multiple accolades, including three Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Actor and two Golden Horse Awards for Best Actor.
In 2023, he became the second Hong Kong actor, after Tony Leung, to be named Asian Filmmaker of the Year at the 28th Busan International Film Awards.
