So far, 19 Indian cars have been tested by Global NCAP under the new crash test protocol to be implemented from July 2022. But, the Citroen eC3 was the first electric car to be tested under the new Global NCAP rules, but it had the lowest rating. The Citroen eC3 received a 0-star rating in crash tests, which is a very poor rating.

adult safety
The electric hatchback may have scored 20.86/34 in adult safety, but its rating was hampered by the lack of ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and non-standard seatbelt reminder. Apart from this, the car also did not meet the standards of pedestrian safety. Chest and leg protection for the driver and passenger was also deemed inadequate.

Lack of protection of children
The Citroen eC3 scored 10.55 out of 49 in child safety (COP), earning it a 1-star rating. Testing found that it lacked an ISOFIX mount, making the child seat unsafe. In a frontal collision, the head of the 3-year-old dummy hit the interior of the vehicle, while in a side collision, the head of the 18-month-old dummy was found completely exposed.

Special attention to safety rating
Indian cars have certainly improved under the new safety guidelines, but examples like the Citroen eC3 remind us that safety should never be compromised. Customers should pay special attention to the safety rating while choosing a car.

India NCAP has now launched its own safety assessment program in India. This is a big step for the Indian market and will provide safer cars in the future. However, cases like the Citroen EC3 make it clear that some carmakers still need to improve safety standards.
