“Steve, you dropped the Border-Gavaskar Trophy”: Ex-player on Smith’s dropped catch of KL Rahul costing Australia in the third Test

The third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw, leaving the teams level at 1-1, with two more games to go. KL Rahul, who is playing as an opener, scored 84 runs in his team’s first innings and played a role in a much-needed draw to keep the visitors in the series.

Australia could have taken his wicket when he was on 33 as Pat Cummins managed to get an edge of his bat on the first ball, but Steve Smith dropped a regulation catch.

This proved costly for the home team as Rahul not only scored runs but also went on to play another 100 balls. The rain breaks in between made the situation challenging for Australia in terms of getting a result.

Former India player Sunil Gavaskar made a cheeky remark on Smith’s mistake after the game ended in Brisbane. “Steve, you dropped the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Australia had a chance to dismiss India early but the dropped catch was costly,” Sunil Gavaskar said.

Matthew Hayden also opined on the mistake. “It was a costly mistake and KL Rahul not only added runs but also played around 100 deliveries. It was an easy chance but Smith made a mess out of it,” he said.

Australia scored 445 and bowled out India for 260 in the first innings. Pat Cummins’ team declared their second essay on 89/7, giving the sub-continent nation a target of 275. The rain didn’t give much time to India, and they managed 8/0 before the play was called off, and the game ended without a result.
