‘Pretty Much Done Now’: Nicole Kidman Wanted To Quit Acting After Daughter’s Birth

Nicole Kidman, recently nominated for her 20th Golden Globe in the Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) category for Babygirlhas shared some personal insights about her career and motherhood, revealing that at one point, she considered quitting acting altogether.

In a recent interview, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on a time when she felt like stepping away from the industry. After the birth of her daughter, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban, in 2008, Kidman thought about retiring from acting. “When I gave birth to Sunday, I was like, ‘I think I’m pretty much done now,’” she recalled. At the time, she and her husband, country music star Keith Urban, had moved to a farm in Nashville, and the actress felt content with her new life.

It was her mother, however, who persuaded her to keep a connection to acting. “My mum said, ‘I wouldn’t give up completely. Keep a finger in it,’” Kidman shared, explaining that her mother encouraged her to maintain a balance between motherhood and her career. Kidman continued, recalling her mother’s advice: “She’s going, ‘Just listen to me. Keep moving forward. Not saying you have to do it to the level you’ve been doing it, but I wouldn’t give it up completely.’”

Opening up further about motherhood, Kidman expressed her deep love for children. “I would’ve loved 10 kids,” she admitted, adding, “But that’s okay because I get to mother other children. I have six nieces and nephews, and I’m godmother to 12.” Kidman shared how she treasures the experience of watching kids grow up, calling them “quirky, funny, and unfiltered.”

Despite her initial thoughts of leaving acting, Kidman’s career continues to thrive. Her upcoming film Babygirlwhich releases in theaters on December 25, has already garnered significant acclaim. Kidman won the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and also received the National Board of Review’s NBR Award for Best Actress. As she reflects on her journey, Kidman’s dedication to both her family and her craft remains clear.
