‘Not going to take any risk’: Rohit Sharma provides crucial update on Shami’s fitness
New Delhi: India captain Rohit Sharma provides an important update on Mohammed Shami’s availability for the last two Test matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The five-match Test series is levelled at 1-1 and the fourth Test will start on December 26.
The fast bowler has not played any international match since the 2023 ODI World Cup final in November due to an ankle injury. He has undergone surgery and has worked on his rehabilitation at the BCCI’s excellence centre in Bengaluru. He made a brilliant comeback and took 4 wickets against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy game.
Shami also played in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) and has been named in Bengal’s squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting Saturday. He picked up 11 wickets in 9 matches for Bengal in the SMAT 2024-25.
‘NCA need to give us some kind of update on Shami’: Rohit Sharma
Several media reports suggested that Shami would join the Indian team in Australia before the fourth Test in Melbourne, starting December 26. However, there’s still no clarity on his participation in the ongoing series. Indian captain Rohit Sharma talked about Shami’s availability and said that it’s high time that someone from NCA gives us some kind of update on him.
“It’s high time somebody from NCA talks about him. Really, that’s our National Cricket Academy where he is doing his rehab. Those guys are the ones who need to come up and give us some kind of update” Rohit said during the post-match press conference.
Rohit further added that he understands that Shami is playing a lot of domestic cricket in India but there have been some complaints about his knee and the management doesn’t want to take any risk with him. The Indian captain also said that the door is open for him and if the guys at the NCA feel that he is ready to play, the team will be happy to have him back.
