Who were you? is regarded as a benchmark for Bollywood thrillers, praise for its intricate storytelling, soulful music and strong performances. It set the standard for psychological thrillers in Indian cinema and remains a beloved classic to this day. Helmed by Raj Khosla and produced by N.N. Sippy, the film stars Manoj Kumar, Sadhana, Prem Chopra and Helen in key roles.

Released on June 1, 1964, the black and white psychological thriller revolves around the story of Dr Anand (Manoj) and Sandhya (Sadhana). One stormy night, Anand offers a ride to mysterious womam when he meets on the side of road. Later, after their romance blooms, he discovers his intended bride is a ghost and then he tries to find who was she and why does she haunt him. Sadhana’s dual role as the mysterious woman is considered one of her career-best performances. Moreover, the black-and-white visuals made the film a true classic in the mystery genre.

According to IMBd trivia, the filmmakers were looking for an unusual-looking dwarf woman for a role in the film. The lead actor Manoj Kumar once noticed a woman begging near the Taj Hotel. He got scared of his appearance and recommended her to his director Raj Khosla. He tracked her down and cast her in the film. Despite small role, her performance added a genuine sense of horror to the story.

Woh Kaun Thi? bagged many accolades during that time, including Filmfare for Best Cinematography. Legendary Madan Mohan gave music to the film which certainly proved to be an asset for it. The film has completed 60 years and still remains one of the iconic psychological thrillers of all time.
