Indian industrialists have a long-standing affinity for London, often investing in some of the city’s most exclusive properties.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute of India, has set a new benchmark in luxury living by acquiring a historic mansion in London worth an astounding Rs 1,446 crore. This property, known as Aberconway House, has been recognized as the most expensive house sold in London in 2023. Built in the 1920s, the mansion is located near Hyde Park and boasts an illustrious history. Previously owned by Dominika Kulczyk, the daughter of Poland’s richest man and industrialist Jan Kulczyk, the property exudes prestige and opulence.

The purchase was made through Serum Life Sciences, the British division of the Poonawalla family. While the family intends to use the mansion during their visits to the UK, it will also serve business needs. Despite the acquisition, according to a Financial Times report, the Serum Life Sciences clarified that the Poonawalla family has no plans to permanently relocate to the UK.

Second Most Expensive House in London’s History

Aberconway House is now the second most expensive property ever sold in London. The record for the priciest transaction remains with a property sold by Saudi Arabia’s former Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz in 2020 for an astronomical Rs 19,000 crore. However, in 2023, Poonawalla’s purchase took the top spot for the year.

Who Is Adar Poonawalla

Adar Poonawalla is the son of Cyrus Poonawalla, founder of the Serum Institute of India. Adar took over as CEO in 2011, leading the company to global prominence, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under his leadership, the Serum Institute produced the Covishield vaccine in collaboration with AstraZeneca and Oxford University, supplying doses to over 70 countries.

Mukesh Ambani’s Luxurious Properties in London

While Adar Poonawalla now owns one of the most expensive residences in London, Mukesh Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Industries and Asia’s richest man, also has significant investments in the city. In 2020, Ambani purchased Stoke Park, a luxurious hotel and estate, for Rs 529 crore. The property features 49 bedrooms, 13 tennis courts, a 14-acre private garden, and a 27-hole golf course, making it a prime example of Ambani’s taste for grandeur.
