Ho Chi Minh City plans to transition its entire public bus network to electric and green energy vehicles by 2030, starting with new electric bus routes in 2025.
This initiative, proposed by the HCMC People’s Committee, aligns with the national green energy transition and emission reduction goals.
The city’s current bus fleet comprises over 2,200 vehicles, including nearly 550 powered by electricity or compressed natural gas (CNG). Diesel buses older than 15 years will be replaced with electric or green energy vehicles between 2025 and 2029. By 2030, all routes will use electric or green energy vehicles.
For unsubsidized routes, any new or replacement vehicles from 2025 onward must be electric to qualify for operation.
To support the transition, the city will build charging stations at depots and parking facilities, offer low-interest loans for electric bus purchases, and provide subsidies for charging station and CNG infrastructure investments.
HCMC has piloted five electric bus routes since 2022, with one route between Vinhomes Grand Park and Saigon Bus Station already operational.
This week, 17 new electric bus routes were launched to serve the Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien Metro line, the first of its kind in HCMC that begins operations on Sunday.
