R Ashwin’s father bought tickets for fourth and fifth Tests against Australia, cancelled after son’s call: Report

The family of Ravichandran Ashwin is shocked as the spinner announced a sudden retirement from international cricket. His decision midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came as a big surprise for his father, Ravichandran. He was all set to travel to Australia for the fourth and fifth Tests and had bought tickets for the two games at the MCG and the SCG. However, he had to cancel the plan after Ashwin informed him about his decision.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Ashwin was thinking of taking retirement during last year’s Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India. However, the star bowler decided to play in another series against Australia this year as there was no red-ball series lined up after the tour.

“Ashwin’s knee was troubling him and he thought of quitting last year. He was not sure of traveling to Australia for the series but decided push his body as there was no series planned after the Test assignment Down Under. His family and friends were confident that he would remain with the team till the last game of the series. His father was about to travel to Australia for the fourth and fifth Tests and had bought tickets for the two matches. On Tuesday night, he informed his family about his retirement decision,” the report said.

Ashwin flew back to Chennai and was welcomed by his close ones.

His father said that Ashwin was facing humiliation. “Ashwin informed us about his decision at the last moment. There could be many reasons, with humiliation being one,” Ravichandran told ‘CNN News18. However, Ashwin was forced to issue clarification.

“My father isn’t media trained, dey father inneda ithelaam (what’s all this, father). I never thought you will follow this rich tradition of ‘dad statements. Request you all to forgive him and leave him alone,” Ashwin wrote on X.

Earlier, Ravichandran said the family was expecting his retirement. “It was shocking but it was bound to happen because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate it? He took a call on his own.

“I can’t interfere in his decision. One part of mine was happy but another part felt that he should have continued.”
