Magdeburg: Two people were killed and 68 others were injured in a suspicious attack on a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg on Friday evening. According to CNN, the attack occurred when a car deliberately drove into a crowd of people in the market, killing and injuring several people.
Saxony-Anhalt Prime Minister Reiner Hasselhoff confirmed that the two victims included an adult and a child, according to local public broadcaster MDR. 68 people were injured in the tragic incident which took place in the heart of the popular holiday market. Of these, 15 were seriously injured, 37 others were slightly injured and 16 suffered minor injuries.
Emergency response teams, including about 100 firefighters and 50 rescue personnel, were immediately deployed to the scene to assist the injured and take them to nearby hospitals. Local authorities are working quickly to manage the crisis and prevent further damage.
Nancy Facer expressed grief
Following the suspected attack, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser expressed her shock and sadness over the devastating incident, Feser wrote on X, “This news from Magdeburg is extremely shocking. Emergency services are making every possible effort to care for the injured and save lives. “Our deepest sympathies are with the victims and their families.”

He also assured the public that security officials were investigating the incident to clarify details surrounding the attack.
According to German Prime Minister Hasselhoff, the suspected driver of the car involved in the attack has been captured. Haseloff said preliminary information suggests the driver acted alone, and authorities are in the process of compiling further data and conducting inquiries.
“We are currently in the process of compiling and interrogating all further data. As per the current information, it is an individual criminal, so there is no threat to the city now as we were able to arrest him.”
