Environmental protection during mining will remain the main focus area of ​​public sector undertakings

Mumbai Mumbai:Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said environment protection during mining activities remains the main focus area for coal and lignite public sector undertakings (PSUs). He assured that these PSUs not only ensure compliance with the statutory provisions mentioned in the environment laws but also actively fulfill these requirements to maintain and enhance the environmental standards in and around the mining areas. Mr Reddy was chairing the meeting of the Coal Ministry's Parliamentary Consultative Committee in the Parliamentary Annex on sustainability and green initiatives undertaken by the coal sector.

At the meeting, the Minister reiterated the government's commitment towards sustainable development and achieving the target of net zero emissions by 2070 announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He also informed the Committee members about the sustainable development activities adopted by Coal/Lignite PSUs, where coal production goes hand in hand with environmental protection, social welfare and biodiversity conservation.

He emphasized that these efforts will ensure that the coal sector remains a key driver of economic growth and is in line with India's vision of a sustainable and green future. Minister of State for Coal and Mines Satish Chandra Dubey also attended the meeting along with senior officials of the Coal Ministry, CMD (CIL), CMD (NLCIL) and CMDs of CIL's subsidiaries. Joint Secretary, Ministry of Coal also gave a presentation highlighting various sustainability and green initiatives being taken by the PSUs.
