Premier League points table: Man City drop out of top 5 after Saturday’s MD17 matches

New Delhi: The first half of Matchday 17 has come to a close following Arsenal’s thumping win over Crystal Palace. The Gunners saw off their London rivals 5-1 at Selhurst Park to end the year with no losses in any London derby in 2024. Mikel Arteta’s side became the first London club to go unbeaten in London derbies for a whole calendar year since Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in 2005.

This win saw them climb back up to third on the table after they had been knocked down from the spot by Nottingham Forest’s win over Brentford earlier in the day. The Garibaldi had momentarily been in third but following Arsenal’s win have moved back to fourth, the position they started the weekend in. The biggest result from the day however, was easily Aston Villa’s 2-1 win over Manchester City.

Villa comfortably beat the defending champions and broke into the top five of the league, sending Manchester City outside of the top five. The defending champions’ free fall down the table continued with another loss, this time away to Aston Villa and they could go further down the table if Bournemouth manage to beat City’s cross-town rivals, Manchester United. While things were moving around the top half of the table, things remained more or less the same near the bottom half.

After their draw at home to Brighton, West Ham still remained in 14th position, a position they have cemented for a long time now. Crystal Palace’s heavy loss to Arsenal still has them in 15th currently but a win for even one of Everton or Leicester will see them drop down closer to the relegation zone. The biggest movers of the day turned out to be Newcastle United, who started the day in 12th position but ended it in seventh after their 4-0 win over Ipswich Town.
