The US Army's Central Command did not say during which mission the incident occurred. Central Command said in a statement, “The designated missile warships ‘USS Gettysburg’ and ‘USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group. This warship accidentally fired on 'F/A-18' and shot it down. 'F/A-18' USS Harry S. Truman.” However, it is not clear how the Gettysburg mistook the F/A-18 for an enemy aircraft or missile, despite the fact that during combat the ships maintain both radar and radio communications. Central Command said warships and aircraft had shot down several drones and an anti-ship missile fired by the Houthi rebels.
