Big decision of Central Government: 'No Detention Policy' abolished, now students who fail in 5th and 8th will not be promoted to the next class.

New Delhi. The central government has made major changes in school education. The Central Government has abolished the 'No-Detention Policy' for classes 5th and 8th. Now students who fail in the annual examination of class 5th and 8th will not be passed. Earlier, students who failed in these classes were passed and promoted to the next class. However, this will not happen now. Students who fail will get a chance to retake the exam within two months. If a student fails again, he will not be promoted.

Following the amendment to the Right to Education Act (RTE) in 2019, at least 16 states and two Union Territories have already scrapped the 'no-detention policy' for both classes. According to a gazette notification, after the conduct of regular examination, if a child fails to meet the promotion criteria notified from time to time, he/she will be given an opportunity for additional instructions and re-examination within a period of two months.

The notification said, if the child appearing for the re-examination again fails to meet the promotion criteria, he/she will be stopped in class fifth or class eight, as the case may be. While retaining the child, the class teacher will guide the child as well as the child's parents if necessary and provide specific information after identifying learning gaps at various stages of assessment. However, the government has clarified that no child will be expelled from any school until completion of elementary education.
