Shyam Benegal passes away at 90: Prez Murmu, PM Modi, film industry express grief

New Delhi: Monday (December 23, 2024) brought heartbreak to the entertainment industry as renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal breathed his last at the age of 90. He passed away at Mumbai’s Wockhardt Hospital due to chronic kidney disease. The last rites of Benegal are scheduled to take place at 3 pm on Tuesday (December 24, 2024) at Shivaji Park, Dadar.

As the news of Benegal’s demise surfaced, tributes started to pour in from all corners. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his deep sorrow on X (formerly known as Twitter). He stated that the legendary filmmaker’s works will continue to inspire and be cherished by people from all walks of life.

President Droupadi Murmu shared her condolences on the microblogging platform. She wrote that Benegal’s passing marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Indian cinema and television. Prez Murmu also extended her heartfelt sympathy to his family and countless admirers.

Actor Akshay Kumar called Benegal one of India’s finest filmmakers and expressed his pain over the loss. Shekhar Kapur credited Benegal with pioneering ‘new wave’ cinema in the country.

Shyam Benegal career

Shyam Benegal’s illustrious career was honoured with numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri in 1976, the Padma Bhushan in 1991, and the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005. Between 2006 and 2012, he served as a Rajya Sabha MP.

Benegal’s iconic works include masterpieces like Ankur, Mandi, Nishant and Zubeidaa. He also left an indelible mark on television with shows like Bharat Ek Khoj and Samvidhaan. Just days before his demise, Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday on December 14. His most recent work was the 2023 biographical Mujib: The Making of a Nation.
