Government Issues Alert on Telegram Scams, TRAI Fines Major Telecom Operators

Telegram, known for its unique features and popularity among users seeking alternatives to WhatsApp, has become a hotbed for scammers. The Indian Department of Telecom (DoT) has issued a stern advisory alerting users to rising fraudulent activities on the platform.

Scams Targeting Telegram Users

In its recent warning, the DoT highlighted various scams proliferating on Telegram, including:

  • Fake Offers: Scammers impersonate reputable companies to push fraudulent work-from-home schemes or lottery messages.
  • Deceptive Links: Users are lured into clicking malicious links, often disguised as legitimate websites.
  • Gift Card Fraud: Fraudsters pressure users into purchasing non-existent gift cards or similar schemes.

The DoT urged Telegram users to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any messages, links, or offers received on the platform.

TRAI Slaps Hefty Fines on Telecom Operators

Simultaneously, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has taken significant action against major telecom operators—Airtel, Jio, BSNL, and Vodafone Idea—for failing to curb spam calls. The latest fines amount to ₹12 crore, bringing the total penalties to ₹141 crore.

Details of the Penalties

TRAI has consistently penalized telecom companies for non-compliance with regulations designed to reduce unwanted spam and fraudulent calls. Despite repeated warnings, the companies have struggled to implement effective spam control measures.

  • Pending Action: If the telecom operators fail to pay the fines, the Department of Telecom (DoT) has been authorized to recover the penalty amounts by deducting from the companies’ bank guarantees.
  • Future Plans: TRAI continues to enhance its regulations and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard consumers from spam and fake calls.
