Renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal to be cremated with state honours
New Delhi: Shyam Benegal, who breathed his last on Monday (December 23, 2024), will reportedly be cremated with full state honours at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park Electric Crematorium on Tuesday (December 24, 2024). The legendary filmmaker’s last rites are scheduled to take place at 3 pm in Mumbai’s Dadar neighbourhood.
Benegal passed away at Wockhardt Hospital in the city due to chronic kidney disease. He was 90 years old at the time of his tragic demise.

Members of the Indian film fraternity gathered in large numbers at the venue to pay their last respects to Benegal. According to online reports, his funeral was attended by actor Naseeruddin Shah, Boman Irani, Nandita Das, Ronnie Screwvala, Ratna Pathak Shah, Hansal Mehta, Prahlad Kakkar, Gulzar, Shyam Kaushal, Rajit Kapur and Vivaan Shah.

Some of the biggest names in Bollywood, including Amitabh Bachchan, Karisma Kapoor, and Ajay Devgn, took to social media recently to pay homage to the celebrated director. Extending his prayers and condolences, Big B wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) that the film industry lost another stalwart.

“Rest in Peace Shyam Babu. Legend forever,” posted Kapoor along with a still from Benegal’s 2001 film Zubeidaa. Interestingly, she portrayed the titular character in the much-talked-about movie.
Devgn labelled Benegal’s cinema as lessons in humanity and culture. He added that left an indelible mark on ‘all of us’.

For the unversed, Benegal’s flicks such as Ankur, Mandi, Nishant, and Junoon defined the Indian ‘parallel cinema movement’ in the 1970s and 1980s. For his onscreen work, he was honoured with numerous accolades as well.
