ISL: Player of the Week

NorthEast United found their way back to winning ways on Monday, as the Highlanders thrashed Hyderabad FC 5-2.

They came from behind to win the game to end their two-match losing streak.

One of the pivotal figures behind this victory was Guillermo Fernandez, who slammed a brace as NorthEast United FC cut down their two-goal deficit at the G.M.C. Balayogi Athletic Stadium in Hyderabad on Monday to win 5-2.

Guillermo’s goals not only sparked the turnaround but were also instrumental in guiding the Highlanders to a resounding victory, ending their two-match losing streak.

Playing under their newly appointed interim head coach Shameel Chembakath, Hyderabad FC broke away to a 2-0 lead, with Edmilson Correia scoring in the 5th and 12th minute, respectively.

With NorthEast United desperately searching for a way back into the game, Guillermo, the former Athletic Bilbao forward, seized the moment.

In the 18th minute, after a scramble in the box, a loose ball fell to him just inside the area.

With Hyderabad FC’s goalkeeper Karanjit Singh rushing off his line, Guillermo kept his composure, calmly striking the ball with precision.

He sent it crashing into the centre of the goal, past the outstretched hands of Karanjit, reducing the deficit and breathing new life into his team’s hopes of a comeback.

The goal by the Spanish player meant Juan Pedro Benali’s men rose in confidence, and they came all guns blazing in the second half.

With Guillermo and Alaaeddine Ajaraie pressing high up, Hyderabad FC found themselves in trouble.

In the 54th minute, Lenny Rodrigues found the back of the net, levelling the score at 2-2.

Energized by the equalizer, NorthEast United continued to press forward with relentless intensity.

Just seven minutes later, Guillermo once again played a pivotal role.

With his sharp movement off the ball, he linked up with Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who set him up perfectly.

Guillermo made no mistake, firing a powerful shot past Karanjit Singh, giving NorthEast United a 3-2 lead.

It was a well-executed team effort that showcased their attacking chemistry, and for Guillermo, it marked his fourth goal of the season.

Ajaraie made it 4-2 in the 73rd minute by slotting the ball home past Karanjit. Five minutes later, Alex Saji’s own goal completed the rout.

Guillermo, who joined NorthEast United on July 7, 2024, has become a key figure in the Highlanders’ attack this season.

Having scored four goals already in ISL 2024-25, he will be eager to continue his blistering form when NorthEast United face Mumbai City FC on December 30.
