However, it got its real identity after the British declared Tonk as a district in the year 1818. During this period, the founder and Nawab of Tonk, Amir Ali Khan, laid great emphasis on education, art and architecture in his kingdom, due to which many famous palaces, buildings, mansions and religious places were built in this city. One of these wonderful examples of architecture is the Shahi Jama Masjid, which became a grand example of architecture and artistry for the whole of India at that time. The construction of Jama Masjid of Tonk was started by Nawab Amir Khan in the year 1244 Hijri, which was completed around the year 1289 during the reign of Nawab Waziruddin Daulah. The architecture of Jama Masjid of Tonk is largely similar to that of Jama Masjid of Delhi, although one of the main differences between the two is the Hauz i.e. reservoir. In the Jama Masjid of Delhi, this tank has been constructed in the very center of the complex, whereas in the Jama Masjid of Tonk, it has been constructed in a corner.

This amazing mosque of Tonk has been built at the confluence of two roads, one part of which leads towards the Nawab's palace and the other towards Kota-Jaipur. Talking about the architecture of the mosque, it has been completely constructed in Mughal and Rajput architectural style. Its builders have built it on a very high platform to show it as a peaceful and regal symbol. An approximately seven feet high entrance gate has been built in the eastern part of this mosque, on both sides of which two small minarets are decorated for security. The mosque's tank located in the south-western corner is used for ablution, while on its other side a huge verandah has been constructed for Aadgi. Apart from the main gate, a huge gate equipped with nine minarets has been constructed in the northern part of the mosque and a small gate in the western part. The main prayer hall of the mosque is made of white marble with verses from the Holy Quran carved around it, like Delhi's Jama Masjid and other Islamic buildings. The interior and walls of this Jama Masjid are decorated with gold paintings and enamel, which further enhances the inner beauty of this mosque. Along with this, there are four huge minarets which are visible from a long distance on the outside, which can be seen from a distance and the mosque can be identified. The delightful complexity and texture of everything put together gives it a unique look.
