From physical to mental health: Fitness coach shares roadmap to help women stay fit
New Delhi: Women’s health evolves with each life stage, and by understanding and addressing the unique needs of each stage, women can maintain optimal health and well-being. Here’s how to thrive at every step of the journey, covering key life stages: adolescence, reproductive years, menopause, and postmenopause. Mitushi Ajmera, Elite Fitness & Nutrition Coach, shared a roadmap to help women stay healthy mentally, physically, and emotionally across all age groups.
Adolescence (12–18 years): Building the Foundation
Adolescence is a critical time for establishing lifelong health habits. Hormonal changes during puberty influence physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
- Nutrition: Both being overweight & underweight cause health issues. Understanding and practicing good nutrition early on helps make the right choices to combat deficiencies.
- Exercise: Undermining the importance of physical activity is one big issue in women at this age. Regular exercise fosters bone strength, healthy weight, and emotional resilience. Hence, it should be an integral part of this stage. Exercise may also reduce the chances of pcod/s.
- Mental well-being: Women at this stage should be encouraged to have open conversations about self-esteem, body image, and stress to avoid getting burdened by peer pressure.
The habits formed at this stage would make it easier to navigate through life later when life starts making its demands.
Reproductive Years (18–40 years): Managing Health and Fertility
This stage often involves balancing career, family, and personal health. Hormonal fluctuations due to menstruation, pregnancy, or contraception can affect overall health.
- Nutrition: A nutrient-rich diet with lean proteins, healthy fats, and whole grains supports energy and reproductive health.
- Exercise: Women must start focusing on weight training if not done before. The sooner a woman starts the better leverage she has in later years.
- Mental well-being: Practices like mindfulness, yoga, or therapy can alleviate the stress of balancing responsibilities.
Menopause (40–55 years): Navigating Change
Menopause marks the end of menstruation and brings significant hormonal changes, right from the perimenopause phase. Perimenopause itself can last from a few months to several years. A woman may not just face symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, or sleep disturbances but also see a decline in bone and muscle mass. The declining anti-inflammatory hormones cause inflammation to rise in the body. Regular medical checkups become far more important at this stage.
- Nutrition: This stage requires some dietary changes and demands an anti-inflammatory diet with optimum intake of lean protein, fiber, calcium, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids.
- Exercise: Due to bone and muscle loss, there is an increased risk of osteoporosis & sarcopenia, hence weight-bearing & impact exercises become crucial.
- Mental well-being: A woman at this stage may require counseling to cope with emotional shifts and life transitions.
Postmenopause (55+ years): Aging Gracefully
Postmenopause is a time to focus on preventing chronic conditions and maintaining independence. Routine medical check-ups, dental visits, vision tests, and regular screenings for osteoporosis, diabetes, and heart disease are essential and may help in the early detection of potential issues.
- Nutrition: An anti-inflammatory diet rich in antioxidants, fiber, and lean proteins should become the norm for this age group.
- Exercise: Physical activity keeps a woman independent, and supports longevity and vitality. Out of all activities resistance training or weight training is paramount in conserving bone and muscle tissues.
By adopting these strategies, women can navigate each life stage with confidence, resilience, and a proactive approach to health. Embracing a lifelong commitment to self-care ensures a vibrant and fulfilling life at every age.
