I can’t stand anyone from my husband’s family

Seeing anyone from my in-laws now fills me with hatred due to their longstanding condescension toward me and my family ever since I started dating my husband.

I have been married for over five years, and when we wedded, our families were mismatched in terms of wealth, with mine being the poorer one. This caused significant opposition from my husband’s family while we were dating. Even when they eventually consented to our marriage, they insisted on dictating the terms of every procedure. At our wedding, they gave just over one tael of gold, explaining that they didn’t want to be ostentatious, and handed it over discreetly—my poorer family contributed a similar amount.

Throughout the years I’ve lived with my husband’s family, they’ve boasted about being a well-educated and exemplary family, claiming to treat everyone with respect. Yet, they have consistently looked down on my family and treated me with disdain. They often moralized about ethics while my husband’s younger sister, despite her academic achievements, was haughty and ignored anyone she deemed less knowledgeable or financially inferior.

The contradictions between their self-professed values and their actual behavior became starkly apparent on my wedding day, deepening my resentment. Over these five years, I’ve repeatedly discussed these issues with my husband, but he remains silent each time. The sight of any member of my husband’s family now drives me nearly to madness. I feel utterly trapped.

What should I do to resolve this situation?
