BCCI medical team gives a massive update regarding Mohammad Shami’s fitness

Mohammad Shami, the pace spear-head of India, won’t be featured in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy, to be held in Australia, as was confirmed by the BCCI on Monday. Shami played his last match for India during the ODI World Cup 2023 and before being a part of the event, he was expected to be back from injury before the New Zealand series. But now the medical team has declared him unfit for the present Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“Fully healed after surgery to his right heel, Mohammed Shami, however, has stiffness in his left knee,” the BCCI said.

BCCI Steating: The BCCI Medical Team at the Centre of Excellence has been working very hard with Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami on his recovery and rehabilitation after his right heel surgery. The statement reads, “Shami has fully recovered from this heel problem.

This, however, did not deter the paceman from making a comeback on the domestic circuit, where he slogged out a total of 43 overs in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy clash with Madhya Pradesh in November. He also appeared in all nine games of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) while involving himself in a little more bowling practice on the sidelines to build up volume in his bowling load for the Test matches.

Nonetheless, a small amount of swelling has been seen on his left knee because of an increase in the insistent joint load strain due to his bowling workload.

“The swelling is expected as the amount of bowling increased over a long period because, as per the current medical assessment, the BCCI Medical Team has decided that his knee still needs to be exposed to controlled bowling loads for more time.

“Therefore, he has remained unfit for selection for the remaining two Tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy,” the statement from BCCI read.

Shami will continue to receive targeted strength and conditioning from the BCCI medical team at its National Cricket Academy, ramping up his bowling loads to cope with the demands of the longest format of the sport. His chance of making it into the Vijay Hazare Trophy will depend on the progress of his knee.
