Pakistan's military courts sentenced 60 more civilians, the case is related to the riots that took place at Imran Khan's rally on May 9.

Islamabad: Pakistan's military courts convicted 60 other civilians and sentenced them to jail terms ranging from two to 10 years in connection with attacks on military installations during the violence on May 9 last year. This information has been given by the army's media branch 'Inter-Services Public Relations' (ISPR) at such a time.

When only a week ago the Army had convicted 25 persons involved in attacks on military establishments. These attacks were carried out by Imran Khan's supporters in protest against his arrest.

What happened on 9th May 2023

On 9 May 2023, supporters of Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) allegedly stormed several military establishments, including the Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi and the ISI building in Faisalabad, in protest against the arrest of their party's founder in a corruption case. Attacks were carried out in this manner. After this hundreds of suspects were arrested.

Involvement in attacks on military installations

At least 103 people were handed over to military authorities for trial over their involvement in attacks on military installations. The Army said the Field General Court Martial has sentenced the remaining 60 convicts after examining all the evidence, ensuring provision of all legal rights to the convicts, following due process and conducting appropriate legal proceedings.

Khan's relative Hasan Khan Niazi is also among those convicted. He has been sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in the attack on the Jinnah House residence of the Lahore Corps Commander.
