According to media reports, Cricket Australia selection panel chairman George Bailey is 'not sure' whether Pat Cummins will be fit to participate in the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan and UAE. Bailey told the media on Thursday (January 9) that Cummins has 'pain' in his ankle after the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and will undergo a scan soon to ascertain the severity of the injury.
After announcing the squad for the Sri Lanka series, Bailey said, “Pat (Pat Cummins) is definitely on paternity leave for the next some time. He also has some pain in his ankle. He will be scanned in the next week or two and we will know more about the situation.” When asked about the captain's chances of playing in the Champions Trophy, Bailey did not make any promises.
“Not sure yet,” he said. We will have to wait to see his scan results and his progress.” Let us tell you that Pat Cummins bowled 167 overs in five matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. During this period, Cummins was the best bowler for his team. He took a total of 25 wickets at an average of 21.36. He was the second most successful bowler after Jasprit Bumrah in terms of taking most wickets in this series.
Cummins was rested from the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. Now he looks likely to be ruled out of the Champions Trophy 2025, which starts on February 19. Steve Smith has been made the captain of the team for the Sri Lanka tour. In the absence of Cummins, Smith can also lead the team in the Champions Trophy.
