It is known that Shikhar first married Ayesha Mukherjee in 2012, who was 10 years older than him. Ayesha is a resident of Melbourne, Australia and is of British-Bengali origin. Before marriage, Ayesha was divorced and had two children. Both of them also have a son, Zorawar, who lives in Australia with his mother. Dhawan and Ayesha got divorced in 2023.

Dhawan misses his son Zorawar a lot and often shares his pictures and videos with him on social media. After retirement, Dhawan was seen playing in the Nepal Premier League (NPL), where he performed brilliantly for the Karnali Yaks team. He became the first player from India to play in this league.
