The arrested persons extorted Rs 34 lakh from a trader

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Cybercrime unit solved a Digital Arrest fraud case involving Rs 34 lakh and arrested two persons on Friday.
The arrested persons, Baria Sanjeev Kumar Babubhai and Kali Rohit Kumar from Ahmedabad in Gujarat, targeted people posing as law enforcement officials and extorted money.
According to the police, these scammers posing as representatives of courier, telecom department, TRAI, CBI, Cyber Crime Police, Income Tax department, contacted victims on WhatsApp calls, Skype calls and Internet calls. They threatened victims by forwarding fake court order copies and placing them under digital arrest claiming they were involved in serious offences such as money laundering cases, terrorist activities etc.
“They also caution victims that it was a national security issue and confidentiality has to be maintained and nothing to be disclosed to anyone otherwise it will affect their entire family. Once the victim transfers the amount, they block the numbers on the phone,” said D Kavitha, DCP, Cybercrime, Hyderabad.
Based on a recent complaint where they extorted Rs 34 lakh from a trader, the police have booked a case and arrested the fraudsters.
