Dinesh Karthik chooses Pat Cummins as world’s best captain, overlooks Rohit Sharma
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has named Australia’s star pacer and captain, Pat Cummins, as the best captain in world cricket right now, even as he acknowledged Rohit Sharma’s accomplishments as India’s leader. Karthik’s comments come despite Rohit’s remarkable leadership, which saw him guide India to a historic T20 World Cup victory in June 2024.
Since taking over as Australia’s captain in 2021, Pat Cummins has had an extraordinary run, leading his team to victories in both the ICC World Test Championship and the 2023 ODI World Cup. He also masterminded Australia’s first Test series win over India in more than a decade, clinching the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. This win followed a challenging start, with Australia suffering a massive 295-run loss in the first Test.
Karthik praised Cummins’ leadership qualities, noting how he led Australia from the front during the recent Test series, contributing 25 wickets and 159 runs. Karthik described Cummins as the most aggressive cricketer in the world, not due to his words or actions, but because of his confident body language and composure, which reflects his natural leadership.
Karthik mentioned, “In my opinion, Pat Cummins stands out as the most intense cricketer in the world today. He doesn’t rely on words or aggression to show his dominance. Instead, it’s his body language and the way he manages media interactions, both before and after matches, that speaks volumes. His natural leadership ability and the way he leads his team makes him, in my view, the top captain in international cricket at the moment.”
Karthik also praised Cummins for how he handles media and pre- and post-match situations, emphasizing that the Australian captain exudes an aura of leadership both on and off the field, which commands respect.
However, Cummins may miss the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan, as he is scheduled for scans on a sore ankle. The results will determine if he can participate in the tournament.
Earlier, Karthik also defended Rohit Sharma’s interview during the Sydney Test, explaining that it was likely meant to calm the audience amid media speculation about a rift in the Indian team.
