Oscar 2025 nominations delayed, voting increases due to Los Angeles fire
In the wake of the deadly Los Angeles fire, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended the Oscar nomination voting period.
Voting for approximately 10,000 Academy members began on January 8 and was originally scheduled to close on January 12. However, according to Variety, the deadline is now January 14.
Also, the nomination announcement, which was originally scheduled to be announced on January 17, has now been moved to January 19.
The academy sent an email to members Wednesday afternoon from CEO Bill Kramer informing them of the date changes.
“We want to express our deepest condolences to those affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California. “Many of our members and industry colleagues live and work in the Los Angeles area, and we are thinking of you,” the email read.
Additional scheduling changes outlined in the email include: The international feature shortlist screening scheduled for Wednesday night in Los Angeles has been postponed to the weekend. The Los Angeles Sound Branch Bake-Off on January 11 and the Makeup Artist and Hairstylist Branch Bake-Off in LA and New York City have been cancelled.
Conan O'Brien will host the 2025 Oscars ceremony, which will take place on March 2. Several massive fires sparked by extreme winds in Los Angeles County have killed at least five people and caused “serious injuries” to others, according to CNN. The Palisades fire, burning on the western side of LA near Malibu and Santa Monica, has already destroyed at least 1,000 structures. According to CalFire data, it is the most destructive fire ever recorded in Los Angeles County.
