Bangladesh's Tamim Iqbal again retires from international cricket, a big blow to the team before the Champions Trophy.
Bangladesh's star opener Tamim Iqbal has once again announced his retirement from international cricket. Tamim took this decision just before the Champions Trophy 2025, which has dealt a big blow to the team. Earlier, even before the 2023 World Cup, Tamim had surprised the cricket world by suddenly retiring. However, after the intervention of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he reversed his decision within 24 hours.
The decision was taken despite the request of the selectors and the team
Tamim informed the Bangladesh selectors about his decision to retire in Sylhet on Wednesday. Chairman of selection committee Ghazi Ashraf Hossain and captain Nazmul Hossain Shanto urged Tamim to return for the Champions Trophy. Shanto sincerely tried to convince Tamim to join the team.
Tamim took an extra day to reconsider, but ultimately stuck to his decision.
Tamim's statement on retirement
Tamim Iqbal informed about his decision through a Facebook post. they wrote:
“I have been away from international cricket for a long time. That distance will remain. My chapter in international cricket has ended.”
He said:
“I don't want the team's focus to be on me during a big tournament like the Champions Trophy and that diverts the team's focus.”
Tamim praised the efforts of the selection committee and captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto, writing:
“I am grateful to his request to return to the team, but I followed my heart and made the right decision.”
Tamim Iqbal's brilliant career
Tamim Iqbal has been one of the most successful cricketers of Bangladesh. In his career, he played a total of 387 international matches and scored 15,192 runs.
- Records in ODI: Tamim scored 8,357 runs in 243 ODI matches and is the highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in this format.
- Centuries: Tamim has a total of 25 international centuries in his name for Bangladesh.
- Test and T20: He also strengthened the team with his presence in both Test and T20 formats.
However, recently his ODI run record has been broken by his teammate Mushfiqur Rahim.
Had announced retirement earlier also
Tamim Iqbal had earlier announced his retirement from international cricket just before the 2023 World Cup. But at that time Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina intervened and convinced Tamim and within 24 hours he changed his decision.
