BBL|14: Sydney Sixers edge past Perth Scorchers in a run-fest at SCG
In an exhilarating contest of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), Sydney Sixers emerged victorious over Perth Scorchers by 14 runs. A breathtaking century from Steve Smith and an inspired bowling performance from Sean Abbott proved to be the deciding factors in a high-scoring thriller.
Sydney Sixers’ batting brilliance
Asked to bat first after losing the toss, the Sixers posted a formidable total of 220/3 in their 20 overs. Steve Smith anchored the innings with a sensational knock of 121 not out off just 64 balls, smashing 10 fours and 7 sixes. Smith displayed his class and power, punishing the Scorchers’ bowlers with ease.
While Smith dominated the scoring, he found support in Moises Henriqueswho contributed a quickfire 46 off 28 balls, laced with 6 fours and 2 sixes. Late fireworks came from Ben Dwarshuis, who smashed an unbeaten 23 off just 7 balls, including 3 towering sixes.
Among the Scorchers’ bowlers, Ashton Agar was the most economical, conceding just 27 runs in his 4 overs and picking up the wicket of Henriques. However, the rest of the attack struggled to contain the Sixers, with Andrew Tye being particularly expensive, conceding 62 runs in his spell.

Perth Scorchers’ spirited chase
Chasing a daunting target of 221, the Scorchers put up a valiant effort but fell short, managing 206/7 in their 20 overs. Ashton Turner led the fightback with a blistering 66* off 32 balls, hitting 6 fours and 2 sixes. Turner’s aggressive knock kept the Scorchers in the hunt even as wickets fell around him.
Sam Fanning (41 off 29) and Cooper Connolly (33 off 23) provided valuable contributions, while Matthew Spoors added 28 off 17 in the lower order. However, the Sixers’ bowlers kept striking at crucial moments to derail the Scorchers’ momentum.
Sean Abbott was the standout bowler for the Sixers, delivering a match-winning spell of 4/43 in his 4 overs. His ability to pick up wickets at crucial junctures, including the dismissal of the dangerous-looking Connolly, tilted the game in the Sixers’ favour.
