PLI 2.0 for IT Hardware generates Rs 10,000 crore of output and 3,900 jobs in just 18 months
The government on Saturday said the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) 2.0 scheme for IT hardware generated output worth Rs 10,000 crore and 3,900 jobs in just 18 months of its launch. India's electronics manufacturing sector has grown rapidly over the past decade, with total output expected to grow from Rs 2.4 lakh crore in 2014 to Rs 9.8 lakh crore in 2024.
Mobile manufacturing alone has reached Rs 4.4 lakh crore, while exports will be Rs 1.5 lakh crore in 2024. The statement said that about 98 percent of mobile phones used in India are now being manufactured in India and smartphones have become the fourth largest item exported from India.
With the support of the Ministry of Electronics, Tamil Nadu has emerged as a powerhouse in electronics manufacturing, producing Rs 1.3 lakh crore and accounting for 30 per cent of India's exports.
In an unprecedented development for India's electronics manufacturing sector, production of laptops has begun in the country, with Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Friday inaugurating Sirma SGS Technology's state-of-the-art laptop assembly line.
The new assembly line will initially produce 100,000 laptops annually, with scalable capacity to 1 million units in the next 1-2 years. According to the IT Ministry, Sirma SGS currently operates four manufacturing units in Chennai, and its Unit 3 is now starting laptop production.
Sirma SGS has partnered with Micro-Star International (MSI), a leading Taiwanese technology company, to manufacture high-quality laptops in India that will cater to both the domestic and global markets.
In a short span of 18 months since PLI 2.0, the first unit in Tamil Nadu has now become operational and “Made in India” laptops have been launched. The initiative, part of the PLI 2.0 scheme for IT hardware, highlights India's growing capabilities in high-value electronics production and strengthens the country's self-reliance in IT hardware, an official statement said.
The facility is expected to create 150-200 exclusive jobs in electronics manufacturing by FY26, which will have a significant impact on both the regional economy of Tamil Nadu and the national economy of India. These roles are expected to have a ripple effect in shaping and enhancing the future workforce in the region.
According to an official statement, the laptops produced will meet international quality norms, showcasing India's emerging technological and manufacturing capabilities.
