Indian captain Rohit Sharma has been reported to have had retirement plans in his head after the fourth Test of the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. against Australia. However, he was made to think about this decision by his ‘well wishers’. Rohit’s return to the opening position for the Boxing Day Test, which caused Shubman Gill being dropped from the playing XI, did not change India’s luck.

Rohit had made up his mind after MCG. Had his well wishers from the outside didn’t force him to change his mind, we could have well seen another retirement in Australia,” a source stated.

Rohit Sharma had initially decided to retire from Test cricket after a string of poor performances in the BGT. He only scored 31 runs in three Test matches, and suffered six defeats in his last six Tests as a captain. However, he came back from his decision before the final Test in Sydney, which is a move the did not sit well with head coach Gautam Gambhir.

Rohit’s absence from the slip cordon during the team’s final training session in Australia further sparked the questions about his relationship with Gambhir. Though he was not included in the squad for the final Test, Rohit assured his fans that he will continue to play Test cricket.

Rohit had a small interview with Star Sports, where he explained that he did not believe it to be the right time or him to play while his form was struggling.
