Years ago, an actor came to Mumbai from Meerut with the intention of making a name for himself in Bollywood, but he got recognition on TV. The name of that actor is Arun Govil who is now a BJP MP from Meerut-Hapur Lok Sabha. Arun Govil wanted to become a big star in Hindi cinema but he played the role of Shri Ram on TV and started being worshiped in every household.

Arun Govind is celebrating his 67th birthday. Arun was given his first opportunity on TV by Ramanand Sagar and after working in his two serials, he did not need to make a name for himself anywhere else. The same character had changed the life of Arun Govil.

Arun Govil’s early career

Arun Govil was born on 12 January 1958 in a middle class family in Meerut, UP. He spent some of his childhood in Shahjahanpur and took a B.Sc. degree from Agra University. Arun Govil had told in Kapil Sharma show that his father wanted him to do a government job and he had also tried for it. Arun Govil has two sisters and four brothers, one of whom is Vijay Govil who married actress Tabassum.

Tabassum was the first Bollywood presenter who brought the first celebrity talk show ‘Phool Khile Hain Gulshan Gulshan’ on Doordarshan. This show was aired on Doordarshan for 21 years. In 1975, Arun Govil came to Mumbai to join his brother and joined his business here. When he was not interested in this work, he started doing theatre.

After a lot of hard work and struggle, Arun Govil got his first film Paheli (1977). After this he did films like 'Saanch Ko Aanch Nahi' (1979) and 'Sawan Ko Aane Do' (1979). But Arun Govil did not get special recognition. Then he auditioned for Ramanand Sagar's serial Vikram Aur Betal (1985) and got the role of Vikram.

Arun Govil got recognition from 'Ramayana'

In Kapil Sharma’s show, Arun Govil told how he got the role of Ram in ‘Ramayana’. Arun Govil had told that Ramanand Sagar wanted to make his own serial Ramayana and auditions were being held for its cast. As soon as Arun Govil came to know about it, he went to Ramanand Sagar asking for the role of Ram but he refused saying that he would not be able to do this role.

After a lot of searching, Ramanand Sagar could not find anyone for the role of Ram. Later he took the test of Arun Govil and he was selected. This role changed the fortunes of Arun Govil and he got recognition in every household. In this religious serial which came in 1987, Arun Govil played the role of Shri Ram, after which people started considering him as God.

Arun Govil had told in Kapil Sharma’s show that when he was standing with a drink and cigarette at the success party of this serial, then someone came to him and said, God, what are you doing. The actor told that people’s faith was attached to him and since then he also gave up cigarettes and alcohol and always expressed his gratitude for the love of the people.
