Bundesliga 2024-25: Harry Kane’s penalty secures Bayern win over Monchengladbach
New Delhi: Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane delivered the decisive blow in the second half, his goal securing a crucial 1-0 win for Bayern Munich against Borussia Monchengladbach and propelling them back to the Bundesliga’s top spot with a four-point advantage.
Defending champions Bayer Leverkusen secured a 3-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Friday, bringing them within a point of league leaders Bayern. Bayern star player Jamal Musiala was ill and was replaced by veteran Thomas Muller. Midway through the first half, Muller had a good chance but weakly passed the ball to Gladbach keeper Moritz Micolas.
Bayern had complete control over the game with around 71% possession in the first half but could not convert that into goals after even going close. The home side had eight shots to nil in the opening 45 minutes, and the teams went into the break level at 0-0.
With only 20 minutes left in the game, Michael Olise was fouled by Gladbach’s Lukas Ullrich in the box, resulting in a penalty for Kane to take. The England captain made no mistake and sent the ball low to the right and into the nets. As of now, Kane has converted 26 successive penalties for the club and country since his miss in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals against France.

The match was one-way traffic from the start, with Bavarians dominating. Gladbach had to sit on the back seat and soak up the pressure as they made no efforts to score in the first half, and even in the second half, their only effort from Tim Kleindienst flew narrowly over the bar.
What next?
Bayern Munich are leading the standings with 39 points, while Gladbach dropped to 10th place. The Bavarians’ next fixture is a home game against Hoffenheim on January 16th, while Borussia Monchengladbach will travel to Lower Saxony to face Wolfsburg on January 15th.
