Jasprit Bumrah likely to miss Group Stage match of Champions Trophy due to swelling on his back
According to a BCCI source, due to Jasprit Bumrah having swelling on his back, National Cricket Academy will be monitoring his recovery process, and he might miss the group stage matches of the Champions Trophy 2025
In what has come out to be a massive setback for India, star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is likely going to miss the group stage match of the Champions Trophy 2025 next month because of health issues.
Bumrah faced a swelling on his back during the fifth and final Test match of the recently-concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, and has been asked to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, where is recovery is going to be monitored.
The national selectors who had a meeting in Mumbai on Saturday (January 11) to pick the team for the series against England at home later this month, have been updated about the status of Bumrah’s fitness. Though the deadline to announce the squads for the Champions Trophy 2025 is Sunday (January 12), the BCCI has requested fro an extension.
“He (Bumrah) will be going to NCA for his rehabilitation. The initial report says he doesn’t have a fracture but has swelling on his back. So the NCA will monitor his recovery and he will be there for three weeks. But even after that, he will have to play a match or two, even if they are practice games organised to check his match fitness,” stated a BCCI source.
In the recent five-match Test series against Australia, Bumrah took 32 wickets and won the Player of The Series award. He stayed out of the field on the final day of the series in Sydney because of his injury.
The Indian team management is now mindful of his workload in order to prevent the bowler from putting strain on himself. Recently, he also got rested for the third and final Test against New Zealand in Mumbai in order for him to stay fresh for the Test series in Australia.
