That day when hundreds of armed people attacked Mecca and took lakhs of people hostage. This went on for 14 days. After this the army launched a military operation against these attackers.

On November 20, 1979, it was around 5:15 in the morning in Mecca, one of the holiest sites in Islam. The prayers had just ended when hundreds of armed people started appearing in the premises. Then a person moved towards the mike and started giving some instructions. The name of this person was Juhayman Al Otaibi. He was a young Saudi preacher of Bedouin origin who led an ultra-fundamentalist Sunni Muslim Salafi group. Otaibi pointed towards a person and said that Mahdi has come. He said that now there will be justice in this world full of oppression. The attackers started raising slogans of 'Allah Hu Akbar'. In fact, Otaibi believed that the Saudi people had deviated from the path of Islam and were following the dictates of Western countries. Corruption is happening everywhere.

One lakh people were taken hostage

Unarmed Saudi policemen were killed. During this incident, about one lakh people were present in Al Haram Mosque, who were taken hostage. As soon as this news spread all over the world, people were stunned. At the time of the incident, the then Crown Prince Fahd bin Abdul Aziz had gone to Tunisia with his staff. While Saudi National Guards chief Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz was in Morocco.

During this incident, the attackers were continuously firing in the air, so that fear remained, they stopped the Saudi people and then started rescuing the people of other countries. It was revealed that according to the entire plan, the attackers had brought a consignment of weapons packed in coffins inside the mosque a few days ago. Pakistan and France sent their commando teams to Saudi Arabia. Some attackers were also hiding in the underground of the mosque and had captured half of the mosque. In this military action, hundreds of attackers were killed and a large number of civilians lost their lives. Al Qahtani, who called himself Mahdi, also died in this incident. After this operation which lasted for 14 days, on December 4, many attackers including Otaibi surrendered. Then later on January 9, 1980, 63 people including Otaibi were publicly sentenced to death.
