Kolkata Overtakes Bengaluru as India’s Most Congested City in 2024 | Read
In a recent report by the TomTom Traffic Index, Bengaluru has been ranked as India’s second slowest city in terms of traffic for the year 2024, with Kolkata taking the lead as the most congested city in the country.
According to the report, drivers in Kolkata needed an average of 34 minutes and 33 seconds to cover a distance of 10 kilometers, making it the slowest city in India for traffic flow. Bengaluru, which previously held the top spot, now ranks second with an average travel time of 30 minutes and 10 seconds for the same distance. This marks an increase of 50 seconds from the previous year.
The report also highlighted that Bengaluru is the world’s third slowest city for traffic, trailing only behind Barranquilla in Colombia and Kolkata1. The city’s notorious traffic congestion continues to be a significant challenge for commuters, with the average speed dropping to 17.6 km/h.
Experts suggest that the increasing traffic congestion in these cities is due to rapid urbanization, inadequate public transportation infrastructure, and a growing number of private vehicles on the roads. Ashish Verma from the Indian Institute of Science emphasized the need for comprehensive urban planning and improved public transport systems to address these issues.
