Free trade zone planned at Long Thanh airport

The provincial Party Committee met on Thursday with CT Strategies, a U.S.-based customs and trade strategy consulting firm, to discuss plans for a free trade zone connecting Long Thanh Airport and Phuoc An Port, the province’s largest seaport.

The proposed FTZ will be located within the airport precinct, aiming to capitalize on logistics opportunities and foster economic development at both local and regional levels.

FTZs, already established in countries such as China, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Malaysia, offer numerous benefits to businesses. These include exemptions from import and export taxes, streamlined access to markets, enhanced logistics and transportation services, and connectivity with other businesses within the zone.

CT Strategies noted that Dong Nai possesses the necessary conditions to develop a successful FTZ, with an integrated network linking Long Thanh Airport, Phuoc An Port, and the province’s industrial parks. This structure would position Dong Nai as a leading center for modern logistics, manufacturing, and trade in the region, attracting strategic investments, strengthening global supply chain linkages, and accelerating local economic growth.

Following the presentation, provincial leaders directed departments to expedite the preparation of documents seeking government approval to study and propose the FTZ’s establishment.

The Long Thanh International Airport project spans 5,000 hectares and has a total investment of approximately VND336.63 trillion (US$14 billion). Its first phase, slated for completion in 2026, will have a capacity of 25 million passengers per year.

Located about 20 km away, Phuoc An Port covers 800 hectares with an investment of nearly VND20 trillion. The port, expected to begin operations this year, has a capacity of 2.2 million TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) and 4 million tons of cargo annually, accommodating ships with payloads of 30,000 to 60,000 DWT.
