There have been indications that Shreyas Iyer will captain the Punjab Kings in the ongoing season following his purchase at the 2025 Indian Premier League Mega Auction as the franchise’s most expensive acquisition.
Iyer is back with Head Coach Ricky Ponting, who coached him in Delhi Capitals however he went on to win IPL last year as the skipper of KKR and that is what everybody has been longing for when he finds his way back in the team.
Already 30 years old, Iyer expressed gratitude to the management of the Punjab Kings: “I am simply overwhelmed that the team has given me one more chance by investing in me. And I am looking forward to working with Coach Ponting once again. The team looks strong at this stage, and there is a great blend of potential and proven performers. I look forward to winning the championship… that would be my repayal for the trust the management has positioned in me.”
Ponting, too, is quite expectant about the time to come in 2025. If it is going to affect the leadership, as per usual standards and ways, the team shall be able to deliver as it had done in the past.
“That’s really sort of the thing with Shreyas, the sort of cricket mind that he has. It’s a great asset. The way he captained the team, to be able to deliver, but that’s going to be a real asset for the team. I’ve enjoyed my time with Iyer in the past in IPL, so I’m looking forward to working with him again. The combination of his leadership and the amount of available talent in the team F excites me. I’m just hopeful about what will come in the seasons ahead,” Ponting said.
The shortest format seems to be quite proficient in his game, and, therefore, a developer of this master intends to put an end to an endless wait for a first IPL title by forming a whole new leadership team.
“Shreyas has been identified as the captain and because it was finalized at such a price in the auction, we are thrilled. He has been proving to be quite adept in the format, and similarly his aspirations with the team also wrap up pretty well with what we have in mind” about this. “We have a wonderful mix on Shreyas and Ricky Ponting, which makes me think we have a very strong leadership group on our hands,” said Menon.
There has been a lot of action of late in winning the IPL and, last year, also, he was the part of Mumbai team which won the Ranji trophy and helped Mumbai to win the Syed Mustaq Ali trophy under his captaincy.
