Veteran actor Sarigama Viji passes away at 76
Veteran Kannada actor Sarigama Viji, celebrated for his indelible contributions to theatre, cinema, and television, passed away on January 15 at 76 due to multiple organ failure. With a career spanning over four decades, he leaves behind a legacy etched in 269 films and countless memories on stage and screen.
Sarigama Viji, born into the theatre world, gained fame through the iconic play Samsaradalli Sarigama, earning him his enduring nickname. He stepped into the Kannada film industry with Beluvalada Madilalli and went on to portray an array of characters—from comedic to antagonistic—with unmatched finesse.
Beyond acting, Viji worked as an assistant director on over 80 films and contributed to Kannada television, acting in and directing several popular serials. His camaraderie with Tiger Prabhakar and director V. Somashekar marked a defining phase of his prolific career.
The actor, who had been battling age-related health issues, succumbed to multiple organ failure at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday. His last rites will be performed on January 16 at the T.R. Mill crematorium in Chamarajpet from 10 a.m. to noon.
Sarigama Viji’s departure leaves a void in the Kannada entertainment industry. Fans, colleagues, and his family mourn the loss of a beloved artist whose talent and dedication remain an inspiration.
