48 smugglers arrested amid Delhi elections, police recovered 12000 liquor bottles
New Delhi: Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct before the Delhi Assembly elections, 48 people have been arrested under the Delhi Excise Act. Apart from this, 12,000 liquor bottles have been seized. A top police officer gave this information on Wednesday. Joint CP Southern Range, Sanjay Kumar Jain told ANI that as per the Election Commission's directive, Delhi Police has a zero tolerance policy. Our major challenges are action against liquor smugglers, illegal firearms, deposit of licensed weapons and proper execution of NBW (non-bailable warrants).
Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct, we have registered 46 cases under the Delhi Excise Act, in which 48 people have been arrested and 12,000 bottles of liquor have been seized. Jain said that last week Delhi Police registered 11 cases of illegal firearms, in which 12 people were arrested and 8 country-made pistols and 11 knives were recovered. He said 20 cases were registered under drug abuse and 22.8 kg of charas and 800 gm of heroin were recovered.
He said more than 500 habitual criminals have been detained in preventive action. More than 1000 people have been arrested for drinking alcohol in public places and creating public nuisance. The official said that preventive action has been taken against about 1100 people by verification under the Delhi Police Act. More than 1,070 suspicious vehicles were seized in a week.

He said that to ensure free and fair elections, 21 CAPF companies have been asked to guard the inter-state border and patrol sensitive constituencies. The official said the Election Commission has detailed guidelines regarding social media monitoring to keep an eye on social media ahead of the assembly elections. Returning Officers and District Election Officers also have social media monitoring teams which keep an eye on electronic media, print media and social media so that action can be taken against the spread of any kind of fake news. Voting will be held in Delhi on 5 February and counting of votes will take place on 8 February.
